Where: The West Village
What: Shopping for the stinkiest one you can find at Murray’s Cheese, tasting the nectar of the gods at David’s Tea, and ending the afternoon with a cupcake and a glass of wine at Sweet Revenge.
When: Now! Before you’re stuck watching a Twilight marathon with your cousins or helping Aunt Muriel pick lint off her sweater. The city is winking it’s twinkling lights at you and people are just overall nicer. Get. It. In.
Why: Playing hooky will make both of you feel alive and fresh. You’ll have that comfortable rush that only being mildly bad can bring (Santa will still deliver that flat screen, don’t worry). Plus, with this date, you can get your romancing and your holiday shopping out of the way in one fell swoop.
Murray’s is, hands down, the best cheese shop in the city. The cheese mongers spend time paying their dues in the caves and partaking in internships (sounds a bit more interesting than those summers getting coffee and populating excel spread(shits)sheets, huh?). They know what they’re talkin bout.
David’s Tea has an excellent, if at times overpriced, selection of teas. While we know you can get that milk oolong in Chinatown for half the price, but there is something to be said for having a fancy tea buying experience. At least once in a while. Plus, a shiny package from David’s Tea will look a lot better under the evergreen (we’re PC) than an unmarked steel container from Canal Street. Sweet Revenge, which offers baked goods AND wine pairings, is the perfect, slightly drunken ending to your day of naughtiness and indulgence.
Tips: Ask for Sean at Murray’s. He is the master of stink. If you’re above shame, try as many teas as you can before going to David’s. At David’s be bold: ask for a birthday cake rooibos (pronounced roy-boss) or a movie night green, made with real popcorn.
